Decks are an enjoyable addition to any home. They can offer a private and relaxing space, or an energetic area for dining and entertainment. Deciding exactly how you want your deck can be challenging as there are many things to think about. It is recommended that you consider all options and important factors such as the purpose of the deck, the layout or design, your preferred style, as well as your budget.

Site Visit and Deck Design

The first step in a deck project is the site visit. At All-Star our approach is simple; we perform a site visit to get an idea of the area and to take measurements. During this site visit we discuss your requirements and make sure we understand the project scope. We ask important questions about the preferred design, decking materials, and the project timeline. During the visit we provide a ballpark estimate of the cost. After receiving your approval, we prepare a proposal with a drawing of the deck. Every deck design is unique and customizable. Once the proposal is fully approved by you, we proceed with the procurement of materials and construction. 

Decking Materials

There is a variety of decking materials that can be used. Each material has pros and cons. Below is an overview of the materials that we typically work with.  

Pressure-treated wood

The most common material used for decks is pressure-treated wood. This material is the most cost-effective option. It can be sanded and then stained. That said, it does require maintenance but is a very simple material that many people opt for.

Cedar

Cedar is another type of wood that is great for building decks. Although it is more expensive than pressure-treated wood, cedar lasts much longer and has a really beautiful natural appearance and scent. Cedar decks do require some maintenance, however, due to the wood’s natural properties, cedar can withstand the elements much better than pressure-treated wood which in turn results in a longer-lasting deck.

Composite

Composite decks have become very popular recently and for very good reasons. Composite decking is made from a blend of wood fibers and plastic products. Not only does it look nice, it also comes in a variety of colours and grains. These types of decks are extremely low maintenance and really only require sweeping and occasional cleaning. Although this material is more expensive, the low maintenance can certainly justify the extra cost.

Railings

According to the Ontario Building Code, if the deck has an elevation of 30” or higher, the deck will require railings. The railing height requirement is 36” for a single-family detached home. These are some common types of railings as well as their advantages and disadvantages:

• All pressure treated/cedar wood

  • Most-cost effective

  • May require sanding and staining recommended

• All pressure treated/cedar wood with aluminum balusters

  • Less maintenance

  • More modern

  • Variety of baluster styles available (round, square, rectangle)

• All aluminum

  • Very low maintenance 

• Aluminum frames with glass panels

  • Premium style

  • Pairs well with composite decking

  • Allows for unobstructed views

Additional Components

In addition to railings, some homeowners also like to add other features to their decks. Some examples of these features are canopies, privacy walls, and flower boxes. If the deck is elevated, there is also an option to add a small door and use the space underneath the deck as storage.

Lastly, after the build is complete, there is deck maintenance. Decks take a beating from the weather, they are constantly exposed to sunlight, rain, snow or other elements. Therefore and maintenance to keep them safe and looking good.
