Wooden Fences - All About it
With so many options available, choosing the correct type of fence for your own property can be a difficult task. When deciding you should ask yourself why you want to install a fence. Do you need a fence for privacy? Do you need one to keep your children or pets safe? Do you want to improve the overall appearance and value of your property? Whatever your needs are, it is important to have a well-designed and strongly built fence that is not only practical but also aesthetically pleasing. If you just want a simple privacy fence or prefer a more decorative one, All Star Reno can help you with all your fencing needs!
Here are some of the most common styles of wood fences that we have been building for our clients.
Fence Styles
Full Privacy
If your main goal is to achieve privacy, it may be best to go with a full privacy fence, which is also known as a “board on board” style. This type of fence has overlapping boards on one side.
Butted
A butted fence also provides a fair amount of privacy. The boards are placed side by side and are butted together. It is one of the most common fence styles.
Good Neighbour
These types of fences are ideal for lot lines between neighbours. The boards are alternated on each side of the fence with spaces in-between each of the boards. The spaces between the boards allows for airflow, but not a significant amount that would make the space uncomfortable on an extremely windy day.
Horizontal
A horizontal fence, as the name says, is a style where the boards are installed horizontally. The boards are typically placed tightly together to allow privacy but can also be done with spaces in between for a different aesthetic. Horizontal fences are not very common and therefore are more unique.
Custom
If you don’t like the styles described above and have a custom fence idea, All Star Reno can certainly help. Often customers will show us a photo of fence style that they like, we then make a design and proceed to build it.
Fence Posts
Along with the different styles of fences, there are also different sizes of posts. The most common and most cost-effective size is a four by four (4”x4”) post. However if you are concerned about the sturdiness of the fence, you should opt for six by six (6”x6”) posts, as they will provide the most stability.
Post Caps
Although they are optional, it is recommended that you include post caps to maximize the life of your posts and therefore the lifespan of your investment. Post caps can also add to the overall appearance of the fence. Options range from a simple wooden cap, to an iron cap, or a more complex solar cap. Other options are also available.
Lattice
On all styles of fences, lattice can be added to the top, for a different aesthetic. It can be used as a screen or as a support for climbing plants.
Gates
You may also want a gate to provide access to your fenced area. Gates can be designed and built to match the style of the fence. They can be plain and simple or more decorative and complex.
Fence Height
While deciding on details of your fence, you will most likely think about the height. The height is determined by the customer needs and preferences as well as municipal by-law limits. It is always important to check with the municipality to see what the height restrictions are before building. The City of Toronto’s bylaws on fences can be found here: Toronto Municipal Code (Chapter 447 Fences).
As you can see there are many different types of fences that each serve a variety of purposes, and there are some optional components which you may decide to include or exclude. We can discuss your options and make recommendations to assist you with the decision-making. Contact All Star Reno today for a free estimate!
